How The Champion Fund Evaluates and Selects Opportunities — The Ipswich Standard

Selection discipline is inseparable from the access argument. Having relationships that surface exceptional deal flow only creates value if the manager is rigorous about what to do with it. The deals that do not get done matter as much as the ones that do.

The Underwriting Framework

Every opportunity is assessed across four dimensions.

Revenue architecture — what percentage of the asset's revenue is contracted and predictable versus discretionary and short-cycle? Contracted revenue provides the defensive base case. Discretionary revenue is evaluated separately as upside, stress-tested at material downside scenarios, and never used as the core underwriting assumption.

Scarcity structure — how tight is the supply constraint in the relevant league or market? Is that restriction enforced by league policy with historical track record of stability? How much of the scarcity premium is already reflected in comparable valuations versus remaining ahead?

Commercial trajectory — is there a credible, specific upside case for improved commercial performance? Not "the category is growing" in the abstract, but identifiable operational or structural improvements with clear paths to execution.

Entry valuation — does the price relative to comparable transactions support the return expectation? Where is the entry point in the valuation cycle — early, mid, or late?

The Ipswich Standard in Practice

Ipswich Town FC cleared all four dimensions at the time of The Champion Fund's investment. Revenue architecture: Premier League clubs have durable, contracted media rights income as their revenue foundation — and the investment thesis was built on the reasonable expectation that promotion would restore access to that income. Scarcity: the Premier League's 20-club structure means every promoted club captures a share of one of the world's most commercially valuable broadcast agreements. Commercial trajectory: the club had made specific, verifiable commitments to the infrastructure and management investment required for promotion and sustained EPL performance. Entry valuation: Championship-level valuations are materially below Premier League comparables — the entry price reflected the current tier, not the destination.

When Ipswich earned promotion in 2024, the repricing was not a surprise. It was the thesis executing. The valuation at Premier League entry reflects EPL-level media rights, EPL-level commercial partnerships, and EPL-level comparable transaction multiples — all of which were ahead of the entry price, not behind it.

That is what disciplined selection looks like. Not predicting outcomes, but identifying the right entry point for a clearly defined value creation path.
